Concrete, whales and dinosaurs

The building is part of Robin Gibson’s Queensland Cultural Centre. It is pale, board-marked concrete, arranged in stacked terraces above the river at South Brisbane. Kurilpa is the traditional name for this stretch of the south bank, and the museum took it on as part of its title.

Inside, life-size humpback whale models hang in the open atrium, and the galleries climb from there. The collection is about Queensland: its fossils, reef and rainforest animals, First Nations and Torres Strait Islander culture, and the science that runs through all of it. This is one of the most-reviewed attractions in Brisbane, and it is consistently well rated.

What to find on each level

Look up the floor plan at the entrance first, because the galleries spread across several levels. These are the parts most visitors come for:

• Dinosaur and fossil displays: look for Queensland’s own finds, including the Muttaburrasaurus.
• Wild State: Queensland’s ecosystems and wildlife, laid out habitat by habitat.
• Discovery Centre: specimens you can handle, plus staff who will identify things you bring in.
• SparkLab: the hands-on science centre for kids. It is ticketed separately from the free general galleries, so check the official site for current sessions.

The general galleries take two to three hours. Allow half a day if you have children with you and add SparkLab.

Getting to Grey and Melbourne Streets

The entrance is on the corner of Grey Street and Melbourne Street, South Brisbane. South Brisbane railway station is across Grey Street. Cultural Centre busway station is at the museum’s edge and is served by most buses running south out of the CBD.

From the city, walk across Victoria Bridge from the end of Queen Street, which takes about 10 minutes. You can also take the Kurilpa Bridge from North Quay, which lands you beside the Gallery of Modern Art. There is paid parking under the Cultural Centre, but public transport is simpler.

Beating the weekend crowd

The museum is well visited, and the crowds follow school and weekend patterns. On weekends, avoid arriving between 11am and 4pm, because that is when the galleries and SparkLab fill up. The best weekend option is to be at the door when it opens at 9:30am and head upstairs before the family groups arrive.

On weekdays, the calmest hour is 4pm to 5pm. The museum closes at 5pm every day, so that hour is only long enough to see one or two galleries. A good plan is to spend the morning at the Queensland Art Gallery next door, then walk over for a quiet final hour.

A few practical habits help:

• Staff at the front desk give out maps and can tell you about any temporary exhibitions, which are often ticketed separately.
• Card and tap payment are standard at the café and shop.
• Bags go through a quick check at the entrance, so pack light.
• The Cultural Centre forecourt links the museum with the State Library of Queensland, QPAC and GOMA. South Bank Parklands and Streets Beach are a five-minute walk downriver if the kids need some open space afterwards.
