Koh Tao is small enough that most visitors sort themselves by bay: the diving crowd clusters around Sairee and Mae Haad, and the quieter half of the island pools further south. View Point Resort sits in that second half, on a stretch of coast where the hillside drops toward the water and the horizon is unbroken sea rather than a row of moored longtail boats.

The name is literal. The resort is built to use its elevation, with the pool and restaurant positioned to look out over the water rather than at it from ground level. That’s a meaningful difference on an island where so many beachfront places sit flush with the sand and lose the view to whatever’s moored offshore.

The pool deck at golden hour

This is the reason to come even if you’re not staying here. The outdoor pool faces open water, and because the resort sits above the shoreline rather than on it, the sightline runs clean out to the horizon.

Arrive in the hour before sunset. The Gulf of Thailand side of Koh Tao doesn’t get the postcard sunset that the Andaman coast towns do, but the sky still goes through the same soft orange-to-purple shift, and from up here you get it without a boat hull or a beach umbrella in the frame.

The open-air restaurant and bar

Being open-air, the restaurant runs on natural light and sea breeze rather than air conditioning, which on Koh Tao’s climate means it’s more comfortable in the morning and evening than at midday. Expect the usual resort mix of Thai dishes and simpler Western plates, plus a bar that serves through the day given the property’s 24-hour operation.

Because it’s attached to the resort rather than a standalone restaurant with its own reputation, don’t expect a destination menu. Come for the setting and the drinks list, not for a meal you’d cross the island for.

A spa on a small island resort like this tends to run a short, fixed slate of massages and treatments rather than a long menu, and treatment rooms are limited. If a massage matters to your day, ask at reception in the morning rather than assuming you can walk in at 4pm and get a slot.

Getting there and getting around

View Point Resort is on Koh Tao itself, in the Amphoe Ko Pha-ngan administrative district of Surat Thani province, the same paperwork quirk that covers several outer islands in this stretch of the Gulf. There’s no airport on Koh Tao; visitors arrive by ferry from Chumphon, Koh Samui, or Koh Phangan, landing at Mae Haad pier on the island’s west side.

From Mae Haad, the resort is a taxi or songthaew ride rather than a walk. Koh Tao has no real public bus network, so arrange transport through the resort or flag a shared taxi at the pier; the island’s few paved roads wind over a hilly interior, and motorbike rental is common but the terrain gets steep fast if you’re not used to riding.

Making the most of a quiet stretch of coast

This part of Koh Tao doesn’t see the tour-bus volume of the northern beaches, and the resort’s own rating reflects a small, consistently satisfied guest base rather than a mass-market crowd. That’s worth protecting rather than crowding: come for a slow afternoon by the pool, not a quick photo stop.
