Race day on the bay
The 2027 Manila Leg runs on January 17, 2027. “Takbo para sa life” is Filipino for “run for life”, and the start and finish sit inside the SM MOA Complex in Pasay. The complex is built on reclaimed land along Manila Bay. Its roads are wide, flat and mostly closed to traffic on race mornings, which suits both fast times and first-timers.
You can enter one of four distances:
- 16K: the longest option, for runners who already train regularly
- 10K: the popular middle distance
- 5K: a common first race
- 3K: short enough for families and walkers
Getting to the SM MOA Complex
The complex sits at the western end of EDSA, beside Manila Bay. Its landmarks give you easy meeting points: SM Mall of Asia, the MOA Arena, SMX Convention Center and the Seaside Boulevard promenade.
- EDSA Carousel bus: the busway route runs to a Mall of Asia stop on its way to PITX.
- LRT-1: EDSA and Baclaran stations are the closest. From either one it is a short jeepney or Grab ride west along EDSA extension.
- Grab and taxis: these are the usual choice for pre-dawn starts, when public transport is thin. Road closures often push drop-offs to the edge of the complex.
- Driving: the MOA car parks serve race traffic. Exits clog when every distance finishes at once.
Out-of-town runners usually stay in the hotels around the complex or nearby in Pasay and Parañaque. That puts the start line within walking distance.
Running it the Manila way
Philippine road races follow a routine that regulars know well.
- Kit claiming: bibs and race shirts are collected at a set claiming venue on days before the race. Runners often wear the event shirt on the day.
- Start times: Manila road races usually start before sunrise to beat the heat. The longer distances go off first and the shorter ones follow.
- Bib placement: pin it on the front, unfolded, so the timing chip and photographers can read it.
- Passing: “padaan po” (excuse me, politely) is how you ask a slower group to let you by.
- Water stations: runners grab cups on the move and drop them in the bins past each table, not on the road.
- Payment: GCash and Maya are standard at food stalls and in the mall. Small peso notes cover street vendors outside.
January falls in the cool, dry amihan season, so these are some of the most comfortable mornings of the year for running in Manila. Even so, humidity off the bay rises quickly once the sun is up. That is why most runners carry their own water or electrolyte sachets.
After the finish line
The finish area turns into a mix of sponsor booths, photo walls and stretching runners. Afterwards most people walk to Seaside Boulevard for a view across the bay. The breakwater promenade faces west over Manila Bay.
SM Mall of Asia usually opens after the race wraps up. It has breakfast chains, food courts and clean restrooms. Next to it is the Mall of Asia Eye, a Ferris wheel that families in town for the 3K tend to save for later in the day.
If you want to see more of the city, CCP Complex and Roxas Boulevard lie a short ride north along the bay. Intramuros and Rizal Park are further on, about 20 to 40 minutes away depending on Sunday traffic.
