The Tsingtao Brewery was founded in 1903 under German colonial rule, and Qingdao remains the only Chinese city with a beer named after it recognized globally. The International Beer Festival, held nearly every summer since 1991, turns that heritage into a month-plus open-air party: rows of tented beer gardens, stage performances, fireworks on big nights, and a genuinely international guest list of breweries pouring alongside domestic giants like Tsingtao and Harbin.

It’s less a wine-tasting-style event and more a boisterous, all-ages carnival — food stalls, carnival rides, and a crowd that swells into the millions over a full run.

Getting there

The festival’s main venue in recent years has been the Beer City site in Chengyang District, on the western edge of the city near Jimo, purpose-built with permanent pavilion structures for the festival and other expos. It sits a fair distance from the old colonial core (Badaguan, Zhongshan Road), so allow 40–60 minutes by taxi or metro from central Qingdao.

Qingdao Metro Line 1 and Line 8 have stations that connect toward the Chengyang area. The metro network has expanded significantly in recent years, and station names and interchange points shift with new openings. Ride-hailing apps or taxis remain the simplest option for evening return trips, since festival-night traffic and metro closing times can make last-minute exits slow.

• Tastings: Dozens of breweries — domestic regional beers plus imported and craft labels — pour in themed tents, usually organized by country or beer style.
• Tsingtao Brewery Museum: The original brewery site near Dengzhou Road, in the older Shibei/Shinan area, offers tours, tasting rooms, and novelty treats (beer-flavored ice cream has been a fixture, though offerings change) — a good primer on the city’s brewing history.
• Live performances: Nightly stages feature pop acts, folk performances, and DJ sets; some nights close with fireworks over the festival grounds.
• Food: Qingdao specialties like fried clams (gala), spicy crayfish, and grilled seafood skewers are sold alongside the beer tents — pairing local seafood with draft beer is a Qingdao summer ritual in itself.
• Badaguan and the waterfront: The German colonial-era villa district and the Zhan Bridge pier are easy add-ons from a central base.

When to go

The 2026 edition was set for mid-July through August, spanning several weeks rather than a single weekend, which leaves room for a quieter weekday evening or a bigger weekend night. Weekday evenings tend to be noticeably less packed than weekends, when local families and day-trippers from Jinan and other Shandong cities come in. Qingdao’s coastal summer climate is humid but milder than inland China, with sea breezes helping in the evenings, and late nights can be cool enough for light layers.

The 2026 announcement covered the mid-July–August window; gate times, specific brewery lineups, and any entry fees were not included in it. Accommodation in the Shinan or Shibei districts gives easy access to the old town and beaches at the cost of a longer commute to Beer City, while Chengyang puts the festival grounds within easy reach.

Cash and mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat Pay) are both common at vendor stalls, though foreign travelers do well to carry a backup international card or some cash, since not all vendors accept foreign mobile wallets seamlessly.
