A city that stays up on purpose
Most of Taipei winds down after the night markets close. Nuit Blanche Taipei is the one weekend each year when art keeps going through the dark. It is an annual all-night arts festival with free admission, modelled on the Paris Nuit Blanche that started in 2002. Installations, performances and light works fill public space from the afternoon into the following day.
The 2026 edition is themed “Night ka shi”. The name plays on nakashi (那卡西), the roaming musicians with guitar and accordion who once worked the hot-spring inns of Beitou. It suggests a night of song, wandering and a bit of nostalgia, though the programme itself belongs to the organiser.
Dates and the overnight shape
Nuit Blanche Taipei 2026 runs from November 7 to November 8, 2026. That is a week later than the previous editions at Expo Park, which ran from the afternoon of October 31 into November 1.
The format stays the same: it starts in the afternoon and runs straight through the night into the second day. The organiser publishes the dates, venue, programme and running times on its official site. That is also where any registration for individual works appears.
Taipei Expo Park and the Yuanshan approach
Recent editions have been held at Taipei Expo Park, the green belt left over from the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo. It spreads out from Yuanshan Station (R14, red Tamsui-Xinyi Line). Exit 1 drops you straight into the park grounds.
The area is big and split into zones. Inside you will find:
- The Expo Dome and the flora pavilions
- Open lawns near the Zhongshan Soccer Stadium
- Fine Arts Park across Zhongshan North Road, home to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum
Going from one end to the other is a real walk. A full loop of the installations usually takes a few hours rather than a quick pass.
Free entry, and what that means for crowds
There is no gate charge and no general ticket. That changes how the night feels. People come and go all night, families leave after the early evening shows, and a younger crowd moves in as it gets late.
The flip side is that the most photographed works draw queues. Attendees often go to the headline installations before dark or long after midnight. In the early evening they mostly wander the edges.
Moving through the night at Yuanshan
A few habits make the night easier:
- Pay with an EasyCard. The same stored-value card works on the MRT, buses and YouBike, and at the convenience stores around the station.
- Mind the last train. Regular MRT service ends around midnight. People staying for the small hours usually switch to taxis, ride-hailing or YouBike, whose docks are by the station exits.
- Pack a light layer. November nights in Taipei are mild but damp, and the northeast monsoon often brings drizzle. A compact umbrella is the usual kit.
- Queue the Taiwanese way. Lines at installations and food trucks form quietly, in single file, and people keep to them. Flash photography and touching the works are generally frowned on.
Volunteers in event vests direct the crowds and hand out maps. Most visitors use the printed or online map rather than just following the crowd.
Before and after the art
Yuanshan sits next to some of north Taipei’s most rewarding older streets. A short walk west leads to Dalongdong Baoan Temple, with its carved stone dragon columns, and the quieter Taipei Confucius Temple next door.
For food, Shilin Night Market is one MRT stop north at Jiantan Station, and it stays lively late. If the theme leaves you curious about nakashi, Beitou sits further up the same red line. Its hot-spring district is where the tradition took root.
