A plaza facing the tallest tower in town
City Hall Square is a wide stretch of paving in Xinyi District. On this night it becomes a concert ground. The stage faces a crowd that fills the plaza and spills into the avenues around it. Taipei 101 stands a few blocks south, so it is visible from almost everywhere you can stand.
This edition takes place on December 31, 2026, and runs into the early hours of January 1, 2027. Concerts fill the evening. At midnight the countdown hands over to the fireworks launched from the tower itself. The party carries on after that.
Reaching City Hall Square by metro
Every sensible route is underground. Roads around the square close to traffic, and taxis get stuck in the jam well before Xinyi Road.
- Taipei City Hall Station (Bannan Line, Blue, BL18) is the closest stop. Its exits come up beside the square and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s Xinyi stores.
- Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station (BL17) is one stop west. Many people walk from here to avoid the crush at BL18.
- Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station (Tamsui-Xinyi Line, Red, R03) puts you at the foot of the tower, a short walk from the square.
On earlier New Year’s Eves, Taipei Metro ran trains through the night. That kept the crowd moving long after midnight.
Where the Taipei 101 fireworks look best
The square gives you the concert and the tower together. The fireworks come off the building’s sides, floor after floor of it, so the angle matters more than how close you are.
- City Hall Square and Songshou Road look straight at the tower over the crowd.
- Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain), a stone-stepped trail above Xiangshan Station (R02), looks down on the tower and the whole Xinyi skyline. The steps fill up hours before midnight on this night.
- The Xinyi mall bridges link Breeze Nan Shan, ATT 4 FUN and the Mitsukoshi buildings. They give you a raised view, but security usually manages the crowds on them.
Holding your ground in the Xinyi crowd
This is a standing event. There are no seats. People claim their patch hours ahead, and earlier editions were free to attend with no ticket needed for the square. Regulars usually turn up in the afternoon with a light mat or newspaper to sit on until the headliners begin.
How the city behaves on the night:
- Pay with an EasyCard. It covers the metro, buses and every 7-Eleven and FamilyMart nearby, so you skip the queues at ticket machines.
- Eat before the gates. Eating and drinking are banned inside Taipei Metro’s paid areas, and the rule holds even tonight.
- Carry your rubbish out. Taipei has very few public bins. Locals take their wrappers home or hand them in at a convenience store.
- Keep to the right on escalators. The left lane is for people walking, and staff enforce the flow at busy stations.
- Follow the platform lines. Painted arrows show where to queue, and after midnight station staff steer people with megaphones and barriers.
Convenience stores around the square sell hot drinks, rice balls and ponchos. They are the default supply run for anyone who has staked out a spot.
After the countdown
The exit is the hard part. Hundreds of thousands of people try to leave at once, and the stations nearest the square go into queue management. People who want a faster getaway usually walk one or two stops before boarding. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Xiangshan and Taipei 101/World Trade Center are the usual choices.
Some people simply wait out the first surge. Xinyi’s malls and the bar strip around ATT 4 FUN keep the area busy into the small hours. By then the metro platforms have room to breathe again.
Staying near the party
A hotel in Xinyi District means you walk home and skip the platforms completely. Rooms there are in high demand for this night. Many visitors stay along the Blue Line instead, around Zhongxiao Fuxing or Taipei Main Station. Both are a straight ride to Taipei City Hall Station.
The Taipei City Government organises the party, so its official channels are where the programme and the venue layout for each year sit.
