What’s happening and when

MassKara is Bacolod’s “Festival of Smiles,” a month-long civic celebration built around masked street dancing. The 2026 edition runs October 1-25, with the street and arena dance competitions, the festival’s real spectacle, held October 9-18. Closing ceremonies fall on October 25.

The mask is the whole point: oversized, painted, permanently grinning, worn by dance troupes in choreographed routines down the main avenues. It began in the 1980s as a deliberate civic answer to hard economic times, a decision to smile through hardship, and that origin still shapes the festival’s tone today.

Where it happens

Bacolod is on Negros Occidental, reachable by direct flights to Bacolod-Silay International Airport from Manila and Cebu. The competitions and street parties center on downtown Bacolod, radiating from the Bacolod Public Plaza and the main thoroughfares used for the dance parade routes.

Arena-style final competitions typically move indoors to a venue with grandstand seating, separate from the free street viewing. Street segments are free to watch from the sidewalks; grandstand or arena seating for the finals usually requires a ticket.

Tickets and what things cost

Street-side viewing along the parade route costs nothing. Reserved grandstand seats for the main dance competitions are sold separately and prices vary by seating tier and proximity to the judges’ area.

Making the most of the streets

Arrive early for the dance competition days; the best free sidewalk spots along the parade route fill up well before the troupes start moving. Vendors sell local specialties like chicken inasal and piaya along the route, cash is the default payment for street stalls.

Bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to sound systems: speaker trucks run the length of the route at high volume for hours. Dancers rehearse for months, so routines are tight and long; expect each troupe’s segment to run well past what a quick photo stop covers.

If you want a seat rather than a curb spot, buy grandstand tickets ahead rather than showing up hoping for walk-up availability, since good sightlines sell out. Traffic rerouting is heavy on competition days, so if you’re driving in from outside Bacolod, park early and walk the last stretch.
