The route through the building follows water downhill. You start with the freshwater of Queensland’s tropical north and end in the open ocean. Across 9 ecosystems it holds more than 16,000 specimens. For a first-time visitor that is a useful preview: the tanks show what the reef boats and rainforest tours will point at later.
It’s one of the most-reviewed attractions in Cairns and consistently well rated. The whole visit is indoors and air-conditioned, so it works as a fallback on wet-season afternoons when boats stay in port. Give it two to three hours. Families with small children often take longer at the touch-level tanks.

Weekends are harder. Try not to arrive between 11am and 2pm. That’s when family groups fill the galleries and the eatery gets crowded. Go for the first part of the morning or come after 2pm, and you’ll have more room at the glass for photos without other people’s reflections.

- Eat with a view. The on-site eatery looks straight into the aquarium, so time lunch for after the weekend rush, once 2pm has passed.
- Paying: card and tap-to-pay are standard across Australia, and tipping isn’t expected at the counter.
- Glass etiquette: switch off your flash. It bounces off the acrylic, ruins the shot and stresses the animals.
If you’re heading to the reef, come here first. Once you’ve seen the fish up close in the tanks, you’ll recognise them far more easily through a snorkel mask.
