A city laid out like a map
From Level 77 the Gold Coast makes sense in a way it doesn’t at street level. The beach runs as one pale line south toward Coolangatta. On the inland side, the Nerang River curls through canal estates, and the green ridges of the hinterland rise beyond.
Q1, the tower SkyPoint sits in, was finished in 2005. For a while it was among the tallest residential buildings in the world. The deck is about 230m up. You reach it by a fast express lift that takes well under a minute, and the climb is noticeable mostly in your ears.
What you’re looking at
The deck wraps around the building, so you get every direction in one slow lap. Floor-to-ceiling glass does most of the work. Things to pick out:
- North: the Broadwater, The Spit and the high-rises of Main Beach
- South: Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads, with the coast running down to the New South Wales border
- West: the Nerang River canals and, behind them, the hinterland ranges around Springbrook and Lamington
- Straight down: the sand and surf of Surfers Paradise beach, with the Esplanade running alongside
Plan on 45 minutes to an hour for a full look. Sit down for a coffee or a drink and it easily stretches to two. This is one of the most-reviewed attractions on the coast and it is consistently well rated. The views are the reason, so time your visit around the light.
Morning, sunset or after dark
At the moment it opens at 7:30am and closes at 9pm every day. Observation decks change their hours with the season and on some holidays, so check this month’s times on the official SkyPoint site before you plan around them.
Morning light falls on the beach and the ocean side, which suits photos looking east. Late afternoon turns toward the hinterland as the sun sets behind it. After dark, the tower lines of Surfers and Broadbeach light up. On weekends the bar side turns into an evening venue, which the deck is known for.
Beating the crowds at Level 77
SkyPoint is very popular, and timing makes more difference here than anything else. On weekdays the deck is quietest between 8am and 9am. That’s the hour to come if you want the glass to yourself and clean reflections for photos.
Weekends are a different story. From 11am until 9pm it’s at its busiest. If a weekend is your only option, aim for the opening stretch, before 11am. Once the crowds build you’ll queue at the lift and wait your turn at the best corners.
Tickets, lifts and the bar
A few habits make the visit smoother:
- Book online and you skip working it out at the ground-floor desk. Current prices are on the official site and at the entry counter.
- Card and tap payments are standard, both at entry and at the café-bar. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, though rounding up for good service is fine.
- Keep your ticket handy until you’re back down, in case you’re asked for it at the lift.
- Dress for the venue at night. On weekend evenings the bar works as a nightlife spot, so the deck feels different then. Don’t turn up in damp beachwear.
If standing behind glass isn’t enough, the SkyPoint Climb takes harnessed groups up the outside of the building. You book it separately, so ask at the desk or check the website.
Getting to Hamilton Avenue
Q1 stands at 9 Hamilton Avenue, a block back from the Esplanade in central Surfers Paradise. The G:link light rail is the easiest way in. Get off at Cavill Avenue station and walk a few minutes toward the beach and south. The tower is hard to miss: look for the tallest spire on the skyline.
Combine the deck with the area around it. Cavill Avenue’s mall and the beachfront are just steps away. On some evenings the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets set up along the Esplanade, so check their dates if you’re heading up at dusk. You get the view from above first, then walk out into the same streets.
