Two nights of K-pop in Hanoi
The Golden Disc Awards is Korea’s longest-running music award show. Ilgan Sports founded it in 1986, and it gives separate grand prizes (daesang) for digital songs and physical albums. The 41st edition runs over two consecutive nights, January 9 and 10, 2027. It is the show’s first time in Vietnam.
Moving abroad is now normal for the ceremony. Recent editions went to Jakarta and Fukuoka. Each one is a long evening of performances broken up by award presentations, and the acts are mostly K-pop groups, idols and soloists.
Getting to the Vietnam Exposition Center
The Vietnam Exposition Center (Trung tâm Triển lãm Việt Nam) is a new, very large exhibition complex in Dong Anh district. It sits on the north side of the Red River, well away from the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. Most visitors base themselves in one of these areas:
- Old Quarter / Hoan Kiem: the most hotels and street food, but the longest ride to the venue.
- Tay Ho (West Lake): a little closer to the bridges heading north.
- Dong Anh or near Noi Bai Airport: the shortest trip, with fewer places to eat.
Grab and other ride-hailing apps are the usual way to get there. Expect slow traffic over the river bridges in the evening. After the show, thousands of people request cars at the same moment, so many attendees walk away from the main gates before they book a ride.
January in the capital
January is one of Hanoi’s coolest months. Evenings are often chilly and damp, which surprises visitors who come from southern Vietnam or other parts of Southeast Asia. Fans who queue outdoors usually wear a jacket and layers.
Before or after the show, these sights in the centre are easy to reach:
- Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple
- The Old Quarter’s 36 guild streets, with bún chả and phở for breakfast
- The Temple of Literature
- The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area at Ba Dinh
Tết (Lunar New Year) falls in February 2027, a few weeks after the awards. That means the city is in its pre-holiday mood but not yet closed down for the holiday.
Fan etiquette at a Hanoi GDA night
- Where the information lives: dates, ticket links and the per-night lineup come from the organiser’s official Golden Disc Awards channels. Resale offers on social media are a common route to scams at overseas K-pop events.
- Lightsticks and banners: fans bring official lightsticks and fan-chant during their group’s stage. Vietnamese fandoms are known for big, organised banner and slogan campaigns.
- Paying in Hanoi: street vendors and small cafés mostly take cash in Vietnamese đồng or QR bank transfers. Hotels and malls take cards. Tipping isn’t expected at casual places.
- Two nights, two lineups: different acts usually perform each night, so many fans pick their night by which artists are on.
- Language: a few words of Vietnamese help with drivers. “Cảm ơn” means thank you. Most drivers follow the pin in the app rather than a spoken address.
