Two nights under the Rod Laver roof
There are two nights, two days apart. Benson Boone plays Rod Laver Arena on 12 November 2026 and returns to the same stage on 14 November 2026. With the free day between them, Melbourne gets him for most of a week.
The venue is the centre court of the Australian Open. It is a steel-and-concrete bowl at Melbourne Park, on the city side of the Yarra, and its retractable roof was famous long before the music bookings were. For concerts the court becomes the floor, and the stage usually sits at one end with the tiered seats wrapping around the other three sides.
The singer who lands backflips
The show is very physical. Boone, a singer from Utah, first built an audience on TikTok. He auditioned for American Idol in 2021 and left the competition before the live rounds. Then in 2024 “Beautiful Things” became one of the most-streamed songs in the world, and his debut album, Fireworks & Rollerblades, came out the same year.
His live reputation rests on two things:
- The voice. He has a big, cracking falsetto that jumps octaves in the middle of a line, and he leans on it most on the ballads.
- The backflips. He throws them on stage, often off the piano or mid-chorus, and they have become his signature move.
His second album, American Heart, followed in 2025, so the setlist draws on both records. The crowd at his arena shows is broad: teenagers in matching outfits, parents who came along, and plenty of adults who found him through the radio rather than TikTok. Phones go up for “Beautiful Things”. The whole arena sings the first chorus back to him.
Where the seats and tickets sit
Rod Laver Arena seats people on three levels, and each one gives you a different show.
- Floor: this is the tennis court itself. Standing or seated depends on the configuration the show uses.
- Lower bowl: steep and close. The side bays near the stage put you almost level with the performer.
- Upper tiers: you see the whole stage and lighting rig at once, though the performer looks small.
The arena is run by Melbourne & Olympic Parks, which lists its events on its own website. Benson Boone’s official site lists his tour dates with ticket links. Resale outside the authorised channels is a common way for Australian concertgoers to lose money on popular arena shows. Victoria also has laws capping ticket resale above face value for major events.
Getting to Melbourne Park
You can walk from the city centre. From Flinders Street Station the arena is roughly a 15–20 minute walk east. The route runs along the river through Birrarung Marr, past the bells and the open lawns, and on concert nights the path is a steady stream of fans.
The other options:
- Tram route 70 runs from the city along Flinders Street and Batman Avenue. It stops right beside Rod Laver Arena.
- Trains to Richmond Station or Jolimont Station both leave you a short walk from Melbourne Park.
- Driving is possible, but parking around Melbourne Park fills up when several venues have events. The MCG, AAMI Park and John Cain Arena all sit in the same sports precinct.
Public transport in Melbourne uses the myki card, which you tap on as you board. Concertgoers usually tap on at a station ticket machine before they head for the platform. On event nights the station queues are long.
Getting through the Rod Laver gates
At Melbourne Park the queue is part of the night. Fans typically arrive well before doors so they can go through security and buy merchandise without rushing. The merch stands usually draw the longest lines of the evening, so many people buy their shirt or hoodie on the way in rather than at the end of the show.
Venues at Melbourne Park run mostly on card and phone payments, so tapping a card is normal at the bars and food counters. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia for a drink or a snack. Bag size limits apply at arena gates, and the venue sets out its entry conditions on the Melbourne & Olympic Parks website.
When the encore finishes, roughly fifteen thousand people head for the same few exits. Locals often skip the first trams. They walk back along the river to Flinders Street instead, or wait out the crush with a drink in Richmond.
Swan Street before the doors
You don’t need to eat inside the arena. Swan Street in Richmond is a few minutes’ walk from the precinct’s eastern side, and it has the nearest real dining strip. Pubs, Vietnamese and Greek restaurants and late-opening bars line the street. On event nights the pubs fill with fans in tour shirts.
The city side is just as close. Federation Square and the laneways off Flinders Lane are about a 15-minute walk away. That makes a laneway dinner followed by the river walk to the arena an easy plan, and a lot of interstate visitors stay in the CBD for this reason.
Fans flying in from Sydney, Adelaide or New Zealand often choose the 14 November show. They spend the day in between at Queen Victoria Market, along St Kilda’s foreshore or in the galleries at the NGV on St Kilda Road.
November’s four-seasons problem
Melbourne’s weather in spring is famously unreliable. A warm afternoon can end in a cold southerly change by the time the encore finishes. The roof over Rod Laver Arena takes the rain out of the show itself. The walk back along the exposed river path is another matter.
Concertgoers who have done this before usually carry a light layer they can tie round their waist inside. A small umbrella that fits within the bag limits helps too. November is also the start of the Melbourne summer events calendar, so the city is busy and central hotels fill fast on concert weekends.
