Most people driving the SR2 between Siena and Montalcino stop in San Quirico d’Orcia for a coffee and never notice the garden sits right behind the main piazza. Horti Leonini is easy to miss because it hides in plain sight: a low arched gate off Piazza della Libertà opens straight onto clipped box hedges laid out like a green carpet.

The design dates to 1580, commissioned by Diomede Leoni, a local noble with connections to Michelangelo. The lower section is pure Italian Renaissance geometry: symmetrical boxwood parterres split by gravel paths, centred on a small statue. Climb the steps at the back and the garden turns informal, with holm oaks, a wooded upper terrace, and a walk along the old town walls.

There’s no ticket booth and no crowd control because there’s rarely a queue. At 1,104 reviews and a 4.4 rating, it’s well liked but still under-the-radar compared to the Val d’Orcia’s bigger draws like Pienza’s historic centre or the abbey at Sant’Antimo, twenty minutes south.

Walking the two levels

Enter from Piazza della Libertà; the gate is unlocked during opening hours, 8am to 7pm every day of the week.

The lower garden takes five minutes to cross. The upper terrace, reached by a short flight of stone steps, is where the actual view is: rooftops, the collegiate church’s Romanesque facade, and the Orcia valley beyond the walls.

Bring a camera for the terrace rather than the parterres, which photograph better from above than from inside them.

Why it stays quiet

San Quirico sits on the pilgrim road to Rome, the Via Francigena, so foot traffic through town is steady but rarely bunches up at the garden itself.

Coach tours based in Pienza or Montalcino tend to treat San Quirico as a ten-minute photo stop at the piazza, not a garden visit, which is exactly why Horti Leonini stays calm.

There’s no dedicated car park at the gate, but street parking around the historic centre is straightforward outside peak summer weekends. Buses running the Siena–Montalcino–Montepulciano route also stop in San Quirico.

Fifteen to twenty minutes covers both levels of the garden at an unhurried pace. It suits a short leg-stretch between wine-tasting stops in Montalcino and the thermal baths at Bagno Vignoni, four kilometres away.
