Ahmedabad is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, its old quarter a dense tangle of carved wooden havelis, stepwells and pol houses along the Sabarmati River. It is also Gujarat's commercial engine, pairing centuries-old textile and craft traditions with a fast-growing skyline of business towers and research campuses.
