Mobile networks in India
Reliance JioAirtelVi (Vodafone Idea)
India runs on three networks — Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi — with Jio and Airtel far ahead on coverage and speed. Buying a local SIM as a foreigner means passport paperwork and a wait for activation, which is exactly the friction a travel eSIM bought before the trip removes.
Cities and towns are strongly covered by Jio and Airtel, and the rail corridors between them mostly hold signal. Remote Himalayan valleys (Ladakh, Spiti), desert stretches of Rajasthan and tribal-belt interiors thin out on every network — and in a few sensitive border regions, connectivity is restricted for everyone.
Know this first in India
A data-only eSIM cannot receive Indian SMS codes; if a service insists on an Indian number, that is a counter-with-passport errand — for a normal tourist itinerary, WhatsApp on your home number covers everything.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.
Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

What to look for in a India plan
- Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
- Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
- Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
- A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
- Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.
Good to know in India
- Prefer plans riding Jio or Airtel — Vi's coverage gap is real once you leave the metros.
- Ubers/Olas, train-status apps and QR payments make urban India intensely data-driven — but note most UPI QR payments need an Indian bank account, so carry a card backup and use data for maps and rides.
- Long train journeys are part of the experience: download offline maps and entertainment, and expect signal to come and go with the towns.
