Paracas is a small desert port town on Peru's southern coast, known as the gateway to the Ballestas Islands, often nicknamed the "poor man's Galápagos" for their dense colonies of sea lions, penguins and seabirds. It also borders the Paracas National Reserve, a stark coastal desert of red sand beaches, wind-carved cliffs and salt flats that meets the Pacific.
