Gili Trawangan Sunset Beach: Gili Islands Travel Guide

Gili Trawangan has no cars, no motorbikes, only bicycles and horse carts, so reaching this stretch of west-coast sand already feels unhurried. The beach faces directly toward Bali’s Mount Agung across the strait, which is what makes it the island’s default sunset point.

Finding the right stretch of sand

The beach runs along Jalan Pantai Gili Trawangan on the island’s western side, a 10-15 minute walk from the main harbour where boats from Bali and Lombok dock. Cidomo (horse cart) drivers know it by name if you’d rather ride. There’s no entrance fee and no gate; it’s open beach, accessible 24 hours a day.

Sand is pale and coarse rather than powder-fine, with coral rubble in patches near the waterline. Bring sandals for the walk in. The water here is calmer than the island’s east side, which faces open ocean swell.

Why the sunset here is different

Most sunset-watchers on the Gilis gather at bars with elevated decks and pre-set bean bags. This beach keeps a stretch of open sand where you can sit at water level, closer to the horizon line than any rooftop allows.

Boats moored offshore turn into silhouettes against Agung’s outline around dusk, roughly 6pm year-round given the islands’ equatorial latitude. Dry season, April to October, gives the clearest skies; rainy season sunsets are hit-or-miss behind cloud.

• Bring your own mat or sarong; not every spot has beach loungers

Settling in without paying bar prices

You don’t have to buy a drink from a beachfront bar to sit here. Locals and long-stay visitors treat the sand itself as public space, and it’s currently rated as an under-the-radar spot rather than the packed party beach the island’s east side becomes at night.

Warungs and beach bars along the strip sell drinks and snacks, cash or card depending on the vendor, but there’s no obligation to patronize one to watch the sunset. If you do want food, ordering early avoids the dinner rush that builds as the sky starts to color.

Payment on Gili Trawangan leans cash-first at smaller stalls; card machines are more common at the larger beach clubs nearby. ATMs exist near the harbour but can run out of cash on busy weekends, so carry rupiah before you walk over.

Timing the rest of your visit

Pair sunset here with an earlier snorkel: the island’s house reef and turtle-spotting sites lie just offshore, best visited by boat or a short swim from the north end of the beach. Because there’s no closing time, you can also return after dark for a quieter walk, lit mostly by strings of bar lights rather than streetlamps, since the island runs on limited electricity after midnight in parts.

Give the beach itself an hour around dusk; give the wider walk, including a stop at a nearby warung, two hours total.
