Mobile networks in Indonesia

TelkomselXL AxiataIndosat Ooredoo Hutchison

Indonesia's big three are Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat — and which one your eSIM uses matters more here than almost anywhere, because Telkomsel's coverage lead grows the further you get from Java and Bali.

Jakarta, Bali's south and the main Javanese cities are well covered. Beyond them the archipelago spreads thin: Nusa Penida's cliff sides, Komodo boat routes, rural Lombok and anywhere in eastern Indonesia can drop to nothing — Telkomsel keeps signal longest, which is why locals in remote areas carry it.

Know this first in Indonesia

Going beyond Bali and Java? Prefer a plan that rides Telkomsel's network — on the outer islands the difference is not speed, it's signal versus none.

30-second check

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.

Fastest way*#06#Dial it in your phone app — if an EID appears in the list, the phone supports eSIM.
Settings → Mobile data (Cellular) → if “Add eSIM” is there, it is supported

Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

Does *#06# show an EID?
Is the phone carrier-unlocked?

Answer the two questionsAn EID plus an unlocked phone means a travel eSIM will work.

What to look for in a Indonesia plan

  1. Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
  2. Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
  3. Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
  4. A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
  5. Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.

Good to know in Indonesia

  • Grab and Gojek are how you move and eat — get data working before you leave the airport, because ordering the first ride is when you need it most.
  • Indonesia registers phone IMEIs for locally bought SIMs on longer stays; a travel eSIM connecting as roaming sidesteps that paperwork entirely for a normal holiday.
  • Boat days (island hopping, Komodo, surf trips) are offline days — download maps, tickets and entertainment the night before.

Frequently asked questions

Will WhatsApp and my phone number still work?

Yes. Keep your home SIM installed and WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number while data flows through the travel eSIM.

Can I share the data with my laptop?

Usually yes, via your phone's hotspot — but some plans block tethering, so check the plan details before buying.

When should I buy and install it?

A few days before departure, on home WiFi. Enable it when you land — unless the plan starts at install, which is why you check the activation rule first.

My phone doesn't support eSIM — now what?

A physical tourist SIM on arrival or a pocket WiFi rental still works fine — the comparison above applies the same way.

Why are there no prices on this page?

Because they change weekly. A price table would mislead you within a month, so we link to live pricing instead.
