Where the four arches meet
The address tells you most of the story. Charminar Kaman Rd runs through Char Kaman, the four ceremonial arches the Qutb Shahi rulers built around the Charminar in the late 16th century. Laad Bazar is the lane running west from the monument toward Mecca Masjid. It is lined with bangle shops.
Laad means lac, the resin used for Hyderabad’s traditional bangles. These are set with glass, stones or mirror chips and stacked in glass cases up to the ceiling. Getting into the Old City
You won’t get a metro right to the door. The closest useful stop is MG Bus Station, the interchange of the Red and Green lines. From there it’s a short auto-rickshaw or cab ride south across the Musi River.
- Ask the driver for “Charminar” or “Laad Bazar”. Everyone knows both.
- Get dropped at the monument and walk. The lanes are too tight for cars when trade is busy.
- Ride-hailing apps work in the area, though pickup points shift when the roads are packed.
Bargaining along Laad Bazar
Price tags are rare here, and haggling is normal at bangle and trinket counters. Pick what you want first, ask for the full set price, then counter. Shopkeepers will often size a bangle by sliding it over your hand, so let them do it.
- UPI payments (QR codes at the counter) are everywhere. Keep small notes for the vendors who don’t take them.
- Bangles come in sets, often in pairs or dozens. Check how many you’re getting.
- Dress modestly, especially near Mecca Masjid. Around Friday midday prayers, the lanes fill up and some traffic stops.
- Hold bags in front of you. The crowds press close.
When to go and what’s next door
The hours are the same all week, 9am to 10:30pm. Our foot-traffic data shows weekends stay calmest between 9am and 7pm. After dark, the area fills with evening shoppers and the stalls light up. During Ramadan, the night market around Charminar pulls very large crowds late into the night.
Give the market itself 45 minutes to an hour. Then fold it into a half-day on foot:
- Charminar: the 1591 monument, a few steps east.
- Mecca Masjid: one of India’s largest mosques, at the end of the lane.
- Chowmahalla Palace: the Nizams’ palace complex, a short walk southwest.
- Irani cafés near the monument, for Irani chai and Osmania biscuits.
