Blue Moon Valley: Lijiang Travel Guide (4.6★)

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain throws a long shadow over this valley, and the water underneath it runs a blue that looks retouched even when it isn’t. Blue Moon Valley is a chain of four lakes, terraced one below the other, filled by snowmelt that’s picked up dissolved limestone on the way down. That mineral content is what gives the water its color: somewhere between turquoise and a pale electric blue, depending on the light and the season.

What you’re actually looking at

The four lakes have names, roughly in order as the water descends: Spirit Water, White Water, Blue Moon, and Listening to Tao. Each one is small enough to walk around in a few minutes, connected by wooden boardwalks and stone paths that hug the shoreline.

Willow trees lean out over the water in places, and on clear days Jade Dragon Snow Mountain’s snow-streaked peak sits directly behind the lakes, which is the shot everyone is trying to get.

Getting there

Blue Moon Valley sits inside the larger Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, about 40 minutes to an hour from central Lijiang by car or taxi. Most visitors arrive as part of a broader Jade Dragon Snow Mountain trip, often combined with the Impression Lijiang show or a cable car ride up the mountain.

There’s a shuttle bus network inside the scenic area itself that links the ticket gates, the cable car stations, and Blue Moon Valley, since the distances between attractions are too far to walk. Confirm current shuttle routes and the overall scenic-area entry ticket before you go, since the mountain area is large and the fee structure covers multiple attractions rather than Blue Moon Valley alone.

Why the water looks retouched

The color isn’t a filter and it isn’t seasonal food coloring, whatever the more skeptical visitors assume on first glance. It comes from calcium carbonate dissolved in the glacial runoff, the same process that colors lakes in places like Jiuzhaigou and Banff.

The shade shifts through the day and across the four lakes; some pools run a deeper jade green, others a lighter, milkier blue, depending on depth and mineral concentration. Overcast days mute the color somewhat, so a sunny morning is genuinely worth chasing if photography is the point of your visit.

Walking the boardwalks

Plan on 45 minutes for a quick loop past the main viewpoints, or closer to an hour and a half if you walk the full boardwalk system around all four lakes. The paths are flat and easy, built for foot traffic rather than hiking boots, though altitude here is still around 3,100 meters, so pace yourself if you’ve come straight up from Lijiang Old Town at a much lower elevation.

Benches and small platforms are positioned at the points with the cleanest mountain backdrop, and that’s where most people stop to take photos rather than at the water’s edge itself.

Avoiding the cable car crowds

Blue Moon Valley shares its scenic area with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable cars, which pull large tour groups on fixed schedules, mostly mid-morning through early afternoon. Because the valley sits lower down and slightly off the main cable car route, it generally sees lighter foot traffic than the summit platforms, and it hasn’t yet become as crowded as the mountain’s bigger draws.

Arriving early, close to when the scenic area opens, is the simplest way to get the lakes with fewer people in frame. If you’re coming by shuttle from the ticket gates, ask which stop serves Blue Moon Valley directly rather than backtracking from the cable car base.

Dressing for the altitude

The scenic area sits well above Lijiang Old Town, and the air is noticeably thinner and cooler at the lakes than in the city. Even in summer, layers help, since wind off the mountain can drop the temperature fast, and some visitors feel mild altitude effects at this elevation.

The Naxi villages nearby

Small settlements and roadside stalls around the scenic area sell local snacks and handicrafts, a gentler complement to the more commercial stretches of Lijiang Old Town.

If you have time after the lakes, Baishuihe (White Water River), also fed by the same glacial system, is nearby and worth a stop for a similar but less visited stretch of blue-white water.
