The Georgian-style mansion, built in the early 1930s with the Maxwell House coffee fortune, now houses an art museum. Around it spread 55 acres of botanical gardens, terraced lawns, and woodland trails.

The house itself mixes period rooms with rotating contemporary art exhibitions, a combination you don’t get at a pure garden or a pure museum. Galleries occupy former living spaces, so scale stays intimate rather than institutional. Budget 45 minutes to an hour inside if art is a priority.

Visiting hours and avoiding the crush

Cheekwood is closed every Monday, an easy trip-planning mistake if you’re building a Nashville itinerary around a long weekend. Tuesday through Sunday it runs 9am to 5pm, with last entry typically before closing, so don’t plan on rolling in at 4:45.

Weekends between 10am and 5pm are the busiest stretch, especially during seasonal light shows or flower installations. If you can only come on a Saturday or Sunday, arrive right at 9am opening to get an hour or so ahead of the crowd. Weekday mornings are the more reliable quiet option if your schedule allows.

Parking is on-site and free, but the lot fills fast during peak bloom weekends and holiday events, so early arrival solves two problems at once.

Making the most of a single visit

Wear real walking shoes. The garden paths are gravel and grass, and the sculpture trail has uneven, wooded footing that doesn’t suit sandals.

Start outdoors before the mansion, since morning light and cooler temperatures make the terraced lawns and Japanese Garden more comfortable to walk than midafternoon. Save the museum galleries, which are climate-controlled, for the heat of the day.

The on-site café works for a casual lunch break between garden sections and the museum, saving you from leaving the property and losing your parking spot. The gift shop near the entrance is worth a pass on the way out rather than the way in, so you’re not carrying bags through the gardens.

Because Cheekwood draws heavy visitation year-round, this isn’t an off-the-radar spot: buying tickets online ahead of a weekend visit avoids a line at the entrance gate during peak hours.
