A junkyard full of cats
The stage looks like a rubbish tip. CATS has always been set in a junkyard: tyres, bent cans and oversized household debris piled high, so the performers look cat-sized against them. This production plays Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands for a limited run.
Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the score around T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. The show opened in London’s West End in 1981. It is almost entirely sung and danced, with hardly any spoken dialogue, so it suits anyone whose English is shaky.
The story is thin on purpose. On one night a year, the Jellicle cats gather and introduce themselves in song. Old Deuteronomy then chooses one of them to be reborn at the Heaviside Layer.
Dates for the Singapore run
The run is announced as 29 October to 22 November 2026 at Sands Theatre. That gives you a little under four weeks, and weekend performances at a run this short usually sell first.
Performance times vary through the week, and matinees are usually on a different schedule from evening shows. Confirm timing and tickets on the official Marina Bay Sands site before you plan dinner around a curtain-up.
Getting to Sands Theatre
Sands Theatre is inside The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, the mall at the foot of the three hotel towers. The MRT gets you there with the least fuss:
- Bayfront Station, on the Circle Line (CE1) and Downtown Line (DT16), connects underground to The Shoppes.
- Follow the signs for The Shoppes, then the theatre signage inside the mall.
- Taxis and Grab cars drop off at the Marina Bay Sands driveways. The resort has parking, but the rates are posted at the car park entrance.
The mall is large and the floors are confusing at first. Allow 15 minutes from the station to your seat, or more if you plan to pick up merchandise.
Choosing seats and buying tickets
Where you sit changes the show. CATS is a dance show first. The big ensemble number, the Jellicle Ball, makes the most sense from a little height, where the full stage patterns are visible. Stalls seats put you closer to the faces and makeup. Productions have also traditionally sent cats prowling through the aisles, so the seats near those aisles can feel very close to the action.
Buy only from the official Marina Bay Sands ticketing page or the agents it names. Resale sites in Singapore regularly list tickets at inflated prices, and theatres can refuse entry on tickets that were transferred against the terms. The current ticket categories and prices are posted on the official page.
Curtain-up etiquette at Sands Theatre
A few local habits make the evening easier:
- Bring a layer. Singapore keeps indoor spaces heavily air-conditioned. Three hours sitting still in a cold auditorium catches out visitors who arrive in beach clothes.
- Dress smart casual. Most of the audience comes from dinner in the mall, so neat clothes are normal. Nobody expects black tie.
- Phones away. Photographing or filming during the performance is not allowed. Ushers will spot a lit screen in the dark and ask you to put it away.
- Latecomers wait. If you arrive after the start, staff usually hold you until a suitable break. Missing the opening number of CATS means missing the cats’ first entrance.
- Paying is easy. Card and contactless payment work almost everywhere in the complex, including the bars and the merchandise stands.
Ask the theatre about age guidance before bringing small children. The show runs long, with an interval, and the second act is slower and more reflective than the first.
Making a night of it at Marina Bay
The theatre sits in one of the busiest leisure districts in the city, so you can easily fill the hours around the show. Within a short walk you have:
- ArtScience Museum, the lotus-shaped building on the waterfront beside the mall.
- The Helix Bridge, the double-helix footbridge leading towards the Esplanade.
- Spectra, the free outdoor light and water show at the Event Plaza on the bay. Check its schedule on the Marina Bay Sands site.
- Gardens by the Bay, reached by the footbridge behind the hotel towers, where the Supertrees are lit after dark.
- Merlion Park, across the water, if you walk the full loop of the bay promenade.
The Shoppes has food courts and restaurants at every price level, but eating before the show means everyone is rushing at the same time. Book a table if you want a sit-down meal before curtain-up, or eat after the show, when the bayfront is cooler and the promenade is lit.
If you know the music only from “Memory”, Grizabella’s big number, listen to a cast recording beforehand. Knowing Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees and Macavity by name makes the first act easier to follow.
