Bali Bird Park: Ubud Travel Guide (4.6★)

Most people passing through Batubulan are headed to Ubud’s rice terraces or the stone-carving workshops along the main road. Bali Bird Park sits just off that route, a series of themed garden zones built around walk-through aviaries rather than a strip of cages, so you spend the visit under net canopies with birds moving at head height and above.

What’s actually inside

The park groups its collection geographically: a Sumatran rainforest zone, an Irian Jaya (Papua) section heavy on birds-of-paradise and cassowaries, and enclosures for African and South American species like macaws and toucans. Komodo dragons and other reptiles live in an adjoining reptile park included in the same ticket.

Look for:

• The Papua enclosure’s birds-of-paradise, rarely seen outside that region
• Free-flight demonstrations, usually held a couple of times a day in the open arena
• Feeding sessions at various enclosures through the day
• A pond area with pelicans and storks you can walk right up to

Paths are shaded and mostly flat gravel, with benches and a café roughly midway through the loop.

Timing it against the tour buses

This is a very popular stop on Ubud day-tour itineraries, and it shows between 9am and 1pm on weekends, when several coach groups can land at once.

Both weekday and weekend visits are calmest from 3pm to 5pm, right up to closing at 5:30pm. Arriving then means smaller knots of people at the aviary entrances and shorter waits for photos at the feeding stations. The trade-off is that you’ll want to check the day’s show schedule in advance, since afternoon slots for the free-flight display can end earlier than the park itself.

If you can only come in the morning, get there at opening, 8:30am, and move through the Papua and reptile sections first before the coach groups arrive.

Getting there from Ubud

The park is on Jl. Bird Park in Batubulan, technically in Kabupaten Gianyar but grouped with Ubud on most maps and itineraries since it’s the closest major sight en route from Denpasar.

• From central Ubud it’s roughly a 30-40 minute drive south, shorter than most rice-terrace excursions
• Grab or Gojek rideshare works for the trip out, though pickup from the park itself can be trickier; ask your driver to wait or arrange a fixed return
• Many Ubud tour operators pair it with the nearby Bali Zoo or a stone-carving village stop, since they’re all clustered around Batubulan and Singapadu
• There’s on-site parking if you’re self-driving or have hired a car with driver for the day

Buying tickets and moving through the gate

Ticket counters are at the main entrance on Jl. Bird Park, and the reptile park next door is covered by the same admission. Prices and any online-booking discounts change often enough that it’s worth checking the park’s official site or a reputable booking platform the week you go rather than relying on an old figure.

Cash and card are both generally accepted at the gate, but bring some rupiah in small notes for the café or souvenir stalls inside, where card readers are less consistent.

Making the most of a couple of hours

Wear closed shoes rather than sandals; some paths cut close to water features and the ground can be uneven near the reptile enclosures. A refillable water bottle helps, since Bali’s midday heat is at its worst during the very hours the park is busiest.

If photography matters to you, the walk-through aviaries mean you don’t need a long lens, but a fast shutter helps freeze wing movement in the shaded canopy light. Staff stationed at feeding points are usually happy to explain a species if you ask, which is worth doing in the Papua section where the birds are least familiar to most visitors.

Pair the visit with lunch at one of the warungs along the main Batubulan road afterward rather than the park café, if you want something cheaper and more local than what’s on site.
