A week of red clay above the Pacific
The Igma Open is professional tennis at close range. It is an annual stop on the ATP Challenger Tour, the level just below the main tour. Here, players chasing ranking points meet on clay at the Jockey Club del Perú’s Las Terrazas de Miraflores club.
Challenger tennis rewards people who sit near the court. The stands are small compared with a main-tour event, so you hear the rally properly: the slide of a shoe through crushed brick, the line judge’s call, the player muttering at his racket. Clay slows the ball and stretches the points. That means long baseline exchanges rather than quick serve-and-volley tennis.
How the week runs
The 2026 edition takes place from Monday 9 November to Sunday 15 November. A Challenger week follows a familiar pattern:
- Early days: qualifying and first-round matches, with several courts in use at once
- Midweek: second rounds and the doubles draw moving forward
- Friday and Saturday: quarter-finals and semi-finals, play focused on fewer courts
- Sunday 15 November: the end of the week, traditionally finals day on this tour
Draws and the daily order of play (orden de juego locally) appear on the ATP Tour website. The organiser handles tickets and spectator access. The early rounds suit wandering fans who like moving between courts. The weekend suits anyone who wants one big match.
November is late spring in Lima. Mornings often start under the coastal grey the city calls garúa and turn brighter by afternoon. On the uncovered seats, the sun becomes stronger than the cool morning suggests.
Reaching Las Terrazas in Miraflores
Miraflores is the coastal district most visitors already stay in, which makes the tournament easy to reach. Lima has no metro line to Miraflores. Fans usually rely on:
- Ride-hailing apps such as Uber, Cabify and inDrive, widely used across the city
- The Metropolitano bus rapid transit along the Vía Expresa, with Miraflores stops such as Benavides and Ricardo Palma
- Walking, if the hotel is near Parque Kennedy or along the Malecón
From Jorge Chávez International Airport in Callao, the drive to Miraflores often takes an hour or more in traffic. Travellers landing that week usually stay in Miraflores or neighbouring Barranco. That keeps the daily trip short.
Courtside manners at a Challenger
The etiquette is strict, and the small venue makes every slip obvious. Spectators move only at changeovers, when players sit at odd games, or between sets. Standing in an aisle mid-point gets you a look from the umpire and possibly a word over the microphone.
A few other habits are standard:
- Phones on silent, and no flash photography during play
- Applause after the point ends, never during the rally
- No shouting at a double fault, even for a local favourite
Spanish is the working language on site, though umpires call scores in English on the ATP circuit. In Miraflores, cards are widely accepted. Many Peruvians also pay with Yape, a local mobile wallet. Sol coins and small notes help at informal food and drink stalls.
Lima between matches
The Miraflores clifftop gives the day an easy shape. The Malecón runs along the bluffs above the Costa Verde, with Parque del Amor and the Larcomar shopping terrace built into the cliff edge. Paragliders often launch from the clifftop parks when the wind allows.
Inland, Huaca Pucllana is a pre-Inca adobe pyramid that rises between apartment blocks. Its restaurant terrace looks straight onto the ruins. Parque Kennedy, Miraflores’ central square, sits beside streets full of cafés and cevicherías. Ceviche is traditionally a lunchtime dish in Lima, which fits around an evening session.
Barranco, just south, is a short ride away. It has colonial-era mansions, the Puente de los Suspiros, and the bars where most of Lima’s nightlife happens. Fans staying the full week often split their evenings between there and Miraflores.
