Kutaisi

Kutaisi is Georgia's ancient western capital, a city of crumbling Soviet-era facades, a roaring river gorge and the honey-coloured ruins of Bagrati Cathedral watching over it from the hilltop. It feels less polished than Tbilisi and more lived-in, a working city that happens to sit beside some of the country's most striking medieval monuments and cave systems.

Getting thereMost travellers arrive via Kutaisi International Airport (KUT), a hub for low-cost carriers including Wizz Air, with buses and marshrutkas running from the terminal into the city and on to Tbilisi or Batumi. Overland, the most reliable option from the capital is the direct minibus (marshrutka) or intercity bus from Tbilisi, since Kutaisi is no longer served by a direct train and rail travellers must change at Rioni station outside the city.
How long to stayPlan on ~2 days to cover the cathedral, the old town and a half-day trip to the nearby Prometheus or Sataplia caves.
