This is the Merchandise Mart, a single structure so large it once had its own zip code, sitting on the north bank of the Chicago River just west of the Loop. It’s a working wholesale hub first and a landmark second, and both facts shape how you should plan a visit.

What THE MART actually is

The building holds floor after floor of high-end home design and furniture showrooms, mostly wholesale spaces that sell to interior designers and architects rather than walk-in shoppers. Layered on top of that is a rotating lineup of trade shows, design weeks, and industry expos that periodically open parts of the building to a wider audience. The lobby and ground-floor retail feel like any large commercial atrium; the upper floors, where the showrooms live, feel like a different world entirely, quiet corridors lined with glass doors and furniture staged like film sets.

Getting there and getting oriented

THE MART sits right on the river at 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, with its own stop on the CTA Brown and Purple lines called Merchandise Mart, elevated tracks running almost directly into the building’s north side. It’s a short walk from the Loop and from River North, and the Chicago Riverwalk passes close enough that you can tack the building onto a walk along the water.

Once inside, head straight to the information desk in the main lobby; the floor directories are not always intuitive given how many showrooms share a level.

The weekday-only rhythm

THE MART keeps strict business hours: 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, closed entirely on Saturday and Sunday. That schedule is a hangover from its identity as a trade building rather than a tourist attraction, and it means weekend visitors will find the doors locked no matter how good the building looks from the riverwalk. If you’re building a Chicago weekend itinerary, this has to be a weekday stop, ideally paired with something else in the Loop or River North before or after.

Showroom floors versus public floors

Most of the upper-floor showrooms are trade-only, meaning they’re set up to sell to design professionals and won’t necessarily welcome a browsing tourist the way a retail store would. The ground floor and lower levels function differently, with restaurants, a food hall-style setup, and occasional public retail that anyone can walk into. Trade shows change this equation for a few days at a time, opening normally closed floors to badge-holders and sometimes the general public, so it’s worth checking what’s scheduled before you go if you specifically want to see the design floors.

Trade show weeks

The building’s calendar of design and trade expos is really the reason it draws visitors beyond the design industry itself. During major show weeks the atrium fills with temporary booths, industry professionals move through in badge lanyards, and the normally hushed showroom floors get genuinely busy. Outside of those windows, the upper floors are much quieter, closer to a library than a market.

If your goal is people-watching and the buzz of an active trade show, time your visit to a scheduled event; if you’d rather see the architecture and river views without crowds, pick a plain midweek afternoon between shows.

Reading the building itself

THE MART’s scale is really the attraction even without a specific showroom to visit. The building was for decades cited as one of the largest in the world by floor area, and that bulk is obvious the moment you’re standing in the lobby looking down a corridor that seems to disappear. Art Deco details survive in the stonework and lobby fixtures from its original construction era, a contrast with the design-forward, contemporary staging inside the showrooms themselves. Even a short pass through the ground floor gives you a sense of the proportions that made it famous.

Getting past the lobby without a trade badge

Not having a designer credential or trade show badge doesn’t mean you’re stuck at the front door. The ground-floor restaurants and retail are open to anyone during business hours, and that’s the easiest way to spend real time in the building without needing an appointment. If you want access to a specific showroom, calling ahead or checking whether a showroom has posted public hours for a current market week is more reliable than showing up and hoping.

Because everything runs on the Monday-to-Friday, 9-to-5 schedule, arriving early in that window before offices fill up tends to make the lobby and elevators far less congested than a midday visit, when deliveries, meetings, and showroom staff are all moving through at once.

Dress like you’re visiting an office building rather than a tourist site; some showroom staff will assume you’re a trade visitor unless you say otherwise, and a polite “just looking, not trade” at a showroom door is usually all it takes to be pointed toward the public areas instead.
