Treeless slopes above the Aragvi
Almost nothing grows up here. Gudauri sits on a high, south-facing shelf of the Greater Caucasus, with its base village above 2,000 m and the top lifts above 3,000 m. Above the hotel blocks of the base area, the mountain is open snowfield with no forest. That means long, wide groomed runs and a lot of off-piste.
The resort has more than 70km of marked slopes served by gondolas and chairlifts. The terrain suits intermediates best: broad blues and reds that run all the way back to the hotels. Freeriders come for the unpatrolled bowls between the pistes. Gudauri is also Georgia’s main base for heli-skiing.
The drive up the Military Highway
Every road in climbs from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway (E117). That is the old route to the Russian border at Upper Lars, so you share it with long lines of trucks. Allow 2–3 hours from Tbilisi, depending on snow and traffic.
- Shared minibus (marshrutka): buses bound for Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) leave from Didube bus station in Tbilisi. Ask to be dropped at Gudauri.
- Taxi or transfer: this is the easiest option if you are carrying skis or arriving from Tbilisi airport.
- Self-drive: you need winter tyres or chains. The switchbacks after Pasanauri are steep.
- Break the trip: Ananuri Fortress sits beside the Zhinvali Reservoir about an hour out of Tbilisi. It makes a good stop on the way up.
Lift passes, closures and off-piste rules
The weather sets the timetable here. Heavy snow or avalanche danger can shut the highway near the Jvari Pass, sometimes for a day or more. Check the road status before you leave Tbilisi, and plan a buffer day before any flight home.
- Passes: you buy them as rechargeable cards at the ticket offices by the lift stations. Current prices are posted there and on the resort’s official site.
- Hours: at the moment the lifts run 9am–5pm every day. Times shift through the season, and the last uphill ride leaves before closing.
- Off-piste: the open slopes look gentle, but avalanches do happen in this terrain. Hire a local guide and carry a transceiver, shovel and probe. Never ski alone off the marked runs.
- Timing: the gondolas closest to the hotels get the morning rush. Starting on a lift further from the base usually saves you some waiting.
- Money: the currency is the Georgian lari. Card payment is common in the base area. Carry some cash for the roadside stalls on the drive.
Georgian hospitality tends to show up at lunch. Mountain restaurants serve khachapuri and khinkali, the pleated dumplings you hold by the knot and leave on the plate. Expect generous portions and a slow meal.
Beyond the lifts
The views alone justify a rest day. Just north of the resort stands the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a Soviet-era curved wall with tile mosaics. It looks out over the Devil’s Valley gorge. Paragliders launch from the slopes nearby when the wind is right.
About 40 km further north, over the Jvari Pass, is Stepantsminda. Gergeti Trinity Church stands on a ridge there against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek. Combined with a ski week, it makes an easy half-day trip, as long as the pass is open. Most visitors stay 3–7 days, which is enough to ski the whole area and keep one day for bad weather.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Gudauri Ski Resort from Tbilisi?
Follow the Georgian Military Highway (E117) north for about 120 km, which takes roughly 2–3 hours. Minibuses bound for Stepantsminda leave from Didube bus station and can drop you at Gudauri. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is easier if you have ski gear.
When is the best time to ski Gudauri?
The season usually runs from December into April, and the deepest snow tends to fall in mid-winter. Lift hours change through the season. This week they run 9am–5pm daily, so check the official site for the month you are going.
Is Gudauri good for off-piste skiing?
Yes. The treeless slopes are among the best freeride terrain in the Caucasus, and heli-skiing runs from here too. There is real avalanche risk, so hire a local guide and carry a transceiver, shovel and probe.
Can the road to Gudauri close?
Yes. Heavy snow or avalanche danger can close the highway near the Jvari Pass. Check conditions before you set off and leave a buffer day before flights home.
What is there to see near Gudauri?
The Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument is just north of the resort, above the Devil's Valley. Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church are about 40 km away over the Jvari Pass. Ananuri Fortress is on the drive up from Tbilisi.
