Beer brewed on site, on a side street
Leyergasse 6 is a short lane running off the Old Town’s main tourist axis. The Kulturbrauerei is several things at once: a hotel, a restaurant, a pub, a beer garden and a working brewery. That means the beer in your glass was brewed in the same building.
It has a big following on Google and steady ratings. It’s a well-known Altstadt address, so don’t expect a secret. Visitors and Heidelbergers share the long tables.
Finding Leyergasse
The brewery is in Heidelberg-Altstadt, in the eastern part of the Old Town. From there you can walk to most of the sights:
- Alte Brücke and the Neckar riverbank: a few minutes on foot
- Kornmarkt and the Bergbahn funicular station up to Heidelberg Castle: a short walk
- Heiliggeistkirche and Marktplatz: just west along the Hauptstraße side
Coming from Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, take a bus to the Altstadt stops around Rathaus/Bergbahn and walk from there. The Altstadt is mostly pedestrianised, so don’t plan on parking at the door.
Timing your table
The kitchen side opens at 12:00 every day. From Monday to Saturday it stays open until 11pm. Sunday is shorter, with doors shut at 9pm, so plan a Sunday dinner for early evening.
Weekends are crowded from 1pm to 11pm, which covers most of the day. If you want a table without a wait, the quietest weekend window is 9pm to 11pm. Since Sunday closes at 9pm, that really means a late Saturday. We have no measured weekday pattern, so a weekday visit is the simplest way around the crowds.
Give it around 90 minutes for a sit-down meal, or longer if you’re staying for a second round in the beer garden.
Sitting down at a German brewhouse
The house runs like a traditional German brewery inn, and a few habits help:
- Book for weekend dinners. With crowds from 1pm onwards on Saturdays and Sundays, walk-ins are a gamble for larger groups.
- Sharing tables is normal in the beer garden and pub. Ask “Ist hier noch frei?” (is this free?) before you sit.
- Say “Prost” and make eye contact when glasses clink. Locals consider it rude to look away.
- Pay at the table. The server brings the bill and asks “Zusammen oder getrennt?” (together or separate?). Splitting by person is routine.
- Tip as you pay. Tell the server the total you want to pay, usually rounding up or adding about 5–10%. Don’t leave coins on the table.
- Ask about cards before you order if you have no cash. Card acceptance varies across Altstadt restaurants.
Prices are on the menu at the entrance and on the brewery’s own website. Check there rather than trusting older reviews. Since the brewery is part of a hotel, you can also stay upstairs. After that, the walk home after the last beer is just the stairs.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly is Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg?
At Leyergasse 6, 69117 Heidelberg-Altstadt, in the Old Town. The Alte Brücke and the Kornmarkt Bergbahn station are a short walk away.
When is the quietest time to visit?
On weekends, 9pm to 11pm is the calmest window. The restaurant closes at 9pm on Sundays, so that window really only applies to Saturday. Avoid weekend afternoons and evenings from 1pm to 11pm, when it's at its busiest.
What are the opening hours?
Monday to Saturday it's open 12:00 to 11:00 PM. On Sunday it's open 12:00 to 9:00 PM.
Do I need a reservation?
For weekend meals it's sensible, because it's busy from 1pm through to 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays, walk-ins are more realistic.
What else is nearby?
The Alte Brücke over the Neckar, the Heiliggeistkirche and Marktplatz are all nearby. So is the Bergbahn funicular up to Heidelberg Castle, which leaves from Kornmarkt.
