Under the Edge of the Horseshoe
The elevator drops, and the river keeps going over your head. Journey Behind the Falls starts inside the Table Rock Centre at 6650 Niagara River Parkway, a few steps from the brink of Horseshoe Falls. A lift takes you down through the cliff’s bedrock to a network of tunnels cut into the gorge wall.
Down there the air is damp and the stone walls sweat. The rock carries a low, steady rumble. Short side passages lead to portals, openings where you stand behind the falling water itself. You see no view through them, only a solid white curtain moving past.
Portals, Decks and the Spray
The tunnels branch out to two kinds of viewpoint. Each feels completely different.
- The portals: a close-up of the back of Horseshoe Falls. It’s loud, wet and mostly white water.
- The observation decks: outdoor platforms at the foot of the falls. You look up at the water dropping from the crest, with mist rising out of the gorge.
- The lower deck: this is where you get properly soaked. On a sunny afternoon you’ll often see rainbows in the spray.
Staff hand out a poncho when you go in. Take it, because the lower deck soaks anything you leave uncovered. Shoes get wet too, so leave suede at the hotel.
Beating the Lines at Table Rock
This is one of the most-reviewed attractions in Niagara Falls, and the elevators set the pace. Everyone goes down and comes back up in batches. When it’s busy, the wait builds in the Table Rock Centre rather than in the tunnels.
Here’s when to go:
- Weekdays: quietest from 9am–10am, and again from 6pm until closing.
- Weekends: the only calm window is 9am–10am.
- Avoid: weekends from 11am–7pm, the busiest stretch.
Right now it opens at 9am every day. It closes at 7pm Monday to Thursday and 8pm Friday to Sunday. Niagara Parks runs it year-round, but hours shift with the seasons. In winter, ice can close parts of the decks, so check the official Niagara Parks site for this month’s schedule before you go.
How Entry Works on the Day
Tickets are sold by Niagara Parks, and entry runs on timed slots. Booking online for an early slot is the simplest way to skip the ticket counter and the longest wait. Prices are listed on the Niagara Parks website. Card payment is normal at the counter.
Once you’re through, the poncho comes before the elevator. Put it on upstairs, not halfway along the tunnel. Phones work fine at the portals, but the decks drench screens quickly, so keep a zip bag or a pocket under the poncho. People drift at their own pace underground. Step aside at the portal openings so others can see.
Plan on 45–60 minutes in total. You’ll need longer if you stop on both decks or arrive at a peak hour.
Getting to the Table Rock Centre
The Table Rock Centre is at the southern end of Queen Victoria Park, right at the Canadian brink of Horseshoe Falls. From the Rainbow Bridge border crossing it’s a walk of about half an hour along the Niagara Parkway promenade. The whole way, you’ll have the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls across the gorge.
Without a car, the WEGO bus system connects the hotel districts, Clifton Hill and the falls area. For drivers, Niagara Parks runs pay parking at Falls Parking near Table Rock. On busy weekends it fills up, which is another reason to aim for that 9am window.
Pairing It with the Rest of the Gorge
Journey Behind the Falls shows you the falls from below. Other nearby sights cover the remaining angles.
- Table Rock railing: right outside the door, the closest point anywhere to the crest of Horseshoe Falls.
- Niagara City Cruises: boats leave from the base of the Clifton Hill area and sail into the mist of the Horseshoe basin.
- Niagara Parks Power Station: a restored hydro station a short walk south, with its own tunnel down to the river.
- Falls Incline Railway: a short funicular linking the falls level with the Fallsview hotel district above.
- Skylon Tower: the overhead view, best saved for evening.
If you do the boat and this tunnel on the same day, go behind the falls first while you’re still dry.
