A concrete shell on a hill of rice terraces
There are no walls in the usual sense. Ryue Nishizawa’s white concrete shell, opened in 2010, sits low among terraced rice fields above the Seto Inland Sea, about 40 by 60 metres and without a single column. Two large oval openings cut through the roof, so the room is open to wind, birdsong and rain.
Inside is Matrix by Rei Naito. Water rises through tiny holes in the floor and forms beads that roll, merge and gather into pools. It never repeats. Most people sit on the floor and watch for twenty minutes or more without meaning to.
Getting to Teshima from Naoshima
The museum is not on Naoshima. Its address is Teshimakarato, Tonosho, in Kagawa’s Shozu District.
- From Naoshima: ferry from Miyanoura port to Ieura port on Teshima.
- From the mainland: boats run to Ieura from Takamatsu and from Uno port in Okayama.
- From Ieura: take the island bus to the museum stop, or rent an electric bicycle near the port. The road climbs, so a non-electric bike is hard work.
There aren’t many boats in a day. Check the return ferry times before you set off, because a missed last boat can leave you stuck on Teshima overnight.
Walking in and keeping quiet
There’s a routine here and staff explain it at the entrance.
- Reserve ahead: tickets are timed and sold on the Benesse Art Site website. The current price is listed there.
- Shoes off: you enter in socks, so wear a pair you don’t mind being seen in.
- No photos inside: cameras and phones stay away in the main space.
- Silence: conversation carries under the shell, and visitors keep it to whispers or nothing.
- The approach: a curving path loops through woodland before the entrance. Walk all of it, because it sets up the view.
Crowd measurements show weekends are busy for the whole day, 10am–4pm. Going on a weekday is the simplest way to get space on the floor. It opens 10am–5pm from March to September and 10am–4pm from October to February, and closes on Tuesdays; from December to February it also closes Wednesdays and Thursdays. The official site has this month’s schedule.
Rounding out the island day
A separate smaller shell next to the museum holds the café and shop. Down the hill, Karato’s coast has Christian Boltanski’s Les Archives du Cœur, where visitors can record their own heartbeat. Back in Ieura, Teshima Yokoo House is worth a stop before your boat.
Leave half a day for the museum and the road to it, or a full day if you add the other sites. Many visitors base themselves on Naoshima and make Teshima a separate trip.
Frequently asked questions
Is Teshima Art Museum on Naoshima?
No. It is on Teshima, the neighbouring island. Take a ferry from Naoshima's Miyanoura port to Ieura on Teshima, then a bus or e-bike to the Karato area.
When is the quietest time to visit?
Weekends are busy for the whole day, 10am–4pm. A weekday visit is the best way to get more space. It is currently closed on Tuesdays.
Do I need to book tickets?
Yes, booking is strongly advised. Timed tickets are sold on the official Benesse Art Site website, and the current price is posted there.
How long should I spend there?
Allow about an hour for the path and Matrix itself, and around half a day once you count the travel from Ieura port. Add more time for Les Archives du Cœur nearby.
Can I take photos inside?
No. Photography isn't allowed in the main space. You also take your shoes off, and visitors stay quiet.
