A Californian kitchen above Nişantaşı
Start at street level, among the boutiques. Nişantaşı is Istanbul’s polished shopping district, where Abdi İpekçi Caddesi carries the big fashion houses and the side streets fill with cafés. The St. Regis Istanbul stands on its southern edge, close to Maçka Park. Spago sits on its roof.
An elevator ride separates the shopping traffic from the dining room. Up top, the view turns away from the streets and opens toward the Bosphorus, the strait dividing Europe from Asia. Wolfgang Puck built his name in Los Angeles, and Spago is his flagship brand. This is its Istanbul outpost.
What the kitchen is doing
The menu crosses two coasts. The kitchen describes its cooking as California-Turkish fusion: the West Coast habit of borrowing freely from Asia and Mexico, applied to Turkish ingredients. Two dishes show the idea best:
- Miso-glazed salmon, a Puck signature built on a Japanese pantry staple
- Lamb tacos, which put Anatolia’s favourite meat into a Californian format
We have not been given the full menu. Expect it to change with the seasons, and read the current version on the restaurant’s own page before you plan an order around a particular dish.
Rooftop restaurant, rooftop lounge
There are two ways to spend an evening here. Spago works as both a restaurant and a lounge. You can book a proper dinner, or you can come for drinks with the city spread out below. The lounge side is what made it a social hotspot. People treat it as a place to be seen in Istanbul, not only a place to eat.
That shapes the room. Come for a quiet, lingering meal and you may share the terrace with a livelier crowd at the bar. If conversation matters most, ask for a table away from the lounge when you book. If the scene is the point, the bar is where you want to be.
Getting to the St. Regis
Taking the metro is easiest. The nearest M2 stop is Osmanbey, and from there it is a walk of roughly 15 minutes. You head south through Nişantaşı’s shopping streets toward Maçka. Taksim on the same line is a slightly longer walk, through Harbiye, past the Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theatre.
Taxis and ride-hailing apps work well for the trip home, especially late. Ask the driver for “St. Regis, Nişantaşı” and most will know it. Traffic in Şişli builds up around the evening rush. If you have a booking, the metro is usually the safer bet on time.
Booking a table at Spago
Treat reservations as essential. For a rooftop with a celebrity name, walk-ins are a gamble, especially on weekend evenings and for terrace seats. Book through the St. Regis Istanbul or Spago’s official channels, and confirm the opening hours at the same time. We have not been given verified hours, and rooftop service can change with the season and the weather.
A few things smooth the evening:
- Ask for a view table in your booking request. Bosphorus-facing seats are the reason most people come.
- Dress up a notch. This is a luxury hotel in Istanbul’s fashion district. Smart-casual is the baseline, and many guests go further.
- Arrive in daylight if the view matters to you. The strait reads clearly before dark, and you get to watch the lights come on.
- Pay by card. It is accepted everywhere at this level in Istanbul. In Turkey, guests usually leave around 10 percent unless service is already on the bill, so check the receipt.
Prices are firmly at the luxury end, as you would expect from a Puck restaurant in a St. Regis. The current menu with prices is posted on the restaurant’s own page. Check it before you go rather than relying on anyone’s memory.
Before and after, on foot
Make an evening of the neighbourhood. Before dinner, walk Abdi İpekçi Caddesi and the lanes around Teşvikiye Mosque, where Nişantaşı’s café terraces fill up in the early evening. Maçka Democracy Park is right beside the hotel. Its slopes run down toward Beşiktaş, an easy green stretch for a pre-dinner stroll.
After dinner, Beşiktaş and the Bosphorus shore are a short taxi ride downhill. Dolmabahçe Palace stands on the water there. It is closed at night, but its long waterfront façade makes a good full stop to an evening of looking at the strait from above.
