Rule of thumb: solo travelers and couples do best with an eSIM. A family sharing one data pool can still justify a pocket WiFi. Roaming suits short trips where convenience beats cost.

Turkey's three networks — Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom — cover the tourist map well, with Turkcell holding the strongest overall reputation. Turkey is not in the EU roaming zone, so a Europe eSIM that carried you through Greece stops paying its way at the border — check for Turkey by name.
Istanbul, the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and Cappadocia's hotel towns are well covered. Central Anatolia's steppe, the east and mountain roads run patchier; underground cisterns, hammams and the Grand Bazaar's vaulted lanes can smother indoor signal.
Does your phone support eSIM?
Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is carrier-unlocked. To check:
- Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears in the list, the phone supports eSIM.
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → "Add eSIM" appears on supported models (iPhone XS and newer).
- Android: Settings → Network → SIMs — look for "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM". Support varies by model and region.
- Bought on a carrier contract? Confirm the phone is unlocked — a locked phone will install an eSIM and then refuse to connect.
Setting it up: five steps
- Buy your Turkey eSIM online — the QR code arrives by email or in the seller's app.
- Install it at home on WiFi, not at the airport: scan the QR code in your phone's settings while you still have a solid connection.
- Label the new line (e.g. "Turkey trip") and keep your home SIM in place for calls and SMS.
- When you land: switch mobile data to the travel eSIM and turn data roaming OFF on your home SIM.
- Check the activation rule before installing — some plans start counting days at install, others at first connection.
What to look for in a Turkey plan
- Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
- Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
- Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
- A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
- Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.

- Buying a Europe-wide plan? Confirm it lists Turkey explicitly — many EU-zone plans do not include it, and finding out at Istanbul Airport is the expensive way.
