Paradise Cave: Phong Nha Travel Guide (4.7★)

Most people expect a dark tunnel. What they get is a cathedral: a single passage that climbs to 72 meters high, lit just enough to show stalactites the size of church organs hanging over a wooden boardwalk. Paradise Cave earned its name for a reason, and even visitors who’ve done a dozen caves elsewhere in Southeast Asia tend to go quiet for the first few minutes here.

Getting there and getting in

The cave sits at Km 16 on the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road, about a 40-minute drive from Phong Nha town. Most visitors arrange a taxi, motorbike, or a seat on a tour van, since there’s no public bus running directly to the entrance.

From the parking area, you can walk roughly 1km to the cave mouth or pay extra for a golf-cart shuttle, which saves your legs for the 524 steps down into the cave itself.

What the first kilometer actually looks like

Only 1km of the cave’s full 31km length is open to the public, and that’s plenty for most legs. The boardwalk runs flat once you’re past the entrance stairs, threading between formations that took hundreds of thousands of years to form.

Around the halfway point, the ceiling opens up into the tallest chamber, where the 72-meter height becomes obvious even without a sign telling you so. Lighting is warm and directional rather than harsh, aimed to pick out texture in the stone rather than flood the whole cavern.

If you want to go deeper than the public kilometer, a separate adventure tour with harnesses and cave guides continues further into the system, booked in advance and at extra cost.

Beating the crowds at a very popular stop

Paradise Cave is one of the most visited sites in the national park, and tour buses from Dong Hoi and Hue tend to land in a wave between 9:30 and 11:30 AM. Getting there at opening, or waiting until after 2:30 PM, means you’ll share the boardwalk with far fewer people.

The walkway is one-directional in the narrower sections, so a large group ahead of you sets your pace whether you like it or not. Locals working the ticket counters will tell you the same thing: early or late beats midday, every time.

Combining it with the rest of the park

Paradise Cave is usually paired with Phong Nha Cave itself, which you reach by boat along the Son River, or with the Dark Cave (Hang Toi), known for its mud bath and zipline. Doing both in one day is common but rushed; splitting them across two days lets you actually rest between.

Botanic Garden and the Duck Stream trail sit closer to Phong Nha town and make an easy half-day if you want something less strenuous than steps and boardwalks.

What to bring and what to skip

Bottled water is sold near the entrance but costs more than in town, so carrying your own saves a few dollars. There’s no strict dress code, but the temperature inside stays cool and slightly damp year-round, so a light layer helps if you tend to feel the chill.

Tripods and large camera bags aren’t practical on the narrower boardwalk sections; a phone or small mirrorless camera handles the low light fine given the directional lighting setup.
