Twelve days of state-against-state hockey
This is the domestic title, so the rivalries run deep. The 16th Hockey India Senior Men’s National Championships runs from November 10 to 21, 2026, in Bhubaneswar. The teams are Hockey India’s member units, mostly state associations, so you are watching Punjab against Haryana or Odisha against Karnataka rather than club sides.
Indian internationals usually turn out for their home states, which makes this a rare chance to see national-team players spread across a dozen jerseys. Recent editions have used a pool stage followed by knockout rounds. Match days stack several games back to back, and the fixtures tighten toward the final at the end of the run.
Kalinga Stadium and the venue question
Our facts give the city, not the ground. Hockey India publishes the venue and full fixture list on its official site and social channels. Bhubaneswar’s established home for the sport is Kalinga Stadium in the Nayapalli area. It hosted matches at the 2018 and 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cups.
The stadium sits inside a larger multi-sport complex on Kalinga Stadium Road, close to the Jaydev Vihar junction. Odisha’s state government has backed Indian hockey heavily for years, and the city treats the sport with unusual seriousness. A domestic final played here inherits some of that World Cup atmosphere.
Tickets and how match days work
Hockey India’s official site and social accounts carry the ticket information for the championship. No prices appear on this page because none were supplied, and any figure we printed would be a guess.
Domestic championships generally draw smaller crowds than World Cup or Pro League fixtures. Fans of the home side, Odisha, tend to turn out in bigger numbers, and so do supporters of traditional hockey states. Spectators commonly stay for two or three games in a row, since one entry often covers a full session.
Getting in and around Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar is easy to reach. Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) has domestic flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Hyderabad, plus a handful of international routes. Bhubaneswar railway station (BBS) is on the Howrah–Chennai main line, with direct trains from Kolkata and New Delhi.
Inside the city, most visitors use:
- App cabs: Uber, Ola and Rapido all operate here.
- Auto-rickshaws: plentiful on main roads; agree on the fare before you set off if it is not metered.
- Mo Bus: the city’s public bus network, which covers the main corridors.
Visitors usually stay around Jaydev Vihar, Saheed Nagar or Nayapalli. All three are a short ride from both the airport and Kalinga Stadium.
Match-day habits in the Kalinga stands
Indian hockey crowds are loud and partisan, and they know the game. A penalty-corner call gets a bigger roar than most goals. Visiting fans generally cheer for their own state, and nobody minds a neutral picking a side.
What attendees usually do:
- Pay by UPI: food stalls and vendors across Odisha take QR-code payments as a matter of course. Visitors without an Indian bank account often carry small notes as well.
- Travel light: major Indian stadiums run bag searches at the gate, and fans tend to leave large bags, outside food and anything sharp at the hotel.
- Greet with “Namaskar”: it works everywhere in Odisha, and a little Odia goes a long way with stadium staff.
- Follow the fixtures online: Hockey India’s live updates and score feeds are how most spectators keep track of a busy day across pools.
November is one of the best months for a stadium visit here. The monsoon has passed, so afternoons are warm rather than steaming and the evenings are mild.
Between fixtures: temples, caves and chhena poda
The gaps between sessions are worth using. Bhubaneswar is known as the Temple City, and the Old Town around Bindu Sagar tank still has hundreds of sandstone shrines.
- Lingaraj Temple: the 11th-century centrepiece. Non-Hindus may not enter, but a viewing platform beside the wall looks over the spires.
- Mukteswara Temple: small and heavily carved, with a famous stone gateway arch.
- Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves: Jain rock-cut cells from around the 2nd century BCE, on two hills on the western edge of the city.
- Odisha State Museum: palm-leaf manuscripts and sculpture, a short ride from the Old Town.
- Ekamra Haat: a handicraft market selling Pipli appliqué, silver filigree and Sambalpuri textiles.
For food, order dalma (lentils cooked with vegetables), a thali at an Odia restaurant, and chhena poda, the baked cottage-cheese dessert with a caramelised crust. Fans with a free day often go to Puri and the Konark Sun Temple, both roughly 60 km away.
