Mobile networks in Argentina

ClaroMovistarPersonal

Argentina has three mobile networks: Claro, Movistar and Personal. All three sell eSIM lines of their own, and a travel eSIM from an international seller rides on one of them, so check which network it names before you buy. Each network publishes its coverage map on its own site; Claro notes that its map is a prediction and does not guarantee signal at any given spot.

Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Salta, Ushuaia and the other cities have steady signal. The country is very large and thinly populated between towns: long stretches of Ruta 40 through Patagonia, the high Andean passes, the trails around El Chalten and the quebradas of the north can have little or no coverage.

Know this first in Argentina

Download offline maps and save your flight, bus and tour details before long overland legs in Patagonia or the north, where the next town can be hours away.

30-second check

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.

Fastest way*#06#Dial it in your phone app — if an EID appears in the list, the phone supports eSIM.
Settings → Mobile data (Cellular) → if “Add eSIM” is there, it is supported

Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

Does *#06# show an EID?
Is the phone carrier-unlocked?

Answer the two questionsAn EID plus an unlocked phone means a travel eSIM will work.

What to look for in a Argentina plan

  1. Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
  2. Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
  3. Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
  4. A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
  5. Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.

Good to know in Argentina

  • Most trips join the regions by domestic flights, so keep boarding passes and hotel addresses saved on the phone rather than only in an app that needs data.
  • Iguazu Falls sits on the border with Brazil; if you plan to visit the Brazilian side too, choose a plan that covers both countries.

Frequently asked questions

Will WhatsApp and my phone number still work?

Yes. Keep your home SIM installed and WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number while data flows through the travel eSIM.

Can I share the data with my laptop?

Usually yes, via your phone's hotspot — but some plans block tethering, so check the plan details before buying.

When should I buy and install it?

A few days before departure, on home WiFi. Enable it when you land — unless the plan starts at install, which is why you check the activation rule first.

My phone doesn't support eSIM — now what?

A physical tourist SIM on arrival or a pocket WiFi rental still works fine — the comparison above applies the same way.

Why are there no prices on this page?

Because they change weekly. A price table would mislead you within a month, so we link to live pricing instead.
