The UAE has two networks — e& (formerly Etisalat) and du — and both are superb: dense 5G in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, strong signal in malls, metros and even most of the desert highways.
Coverage is effectively total in the cities and along the intercity corridors. The practical quirk of the UAE is regulatory, not technical: internet calling (WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar voice/video calls) is restricted in the country on any network, so messaging works normally while calls often do not.
Know this first in United Arab Emirates
Plan around the VoIP restriction: WhatsApp texts flow normally, but voice and video calls over the usual apps are blocked on local networks — some travelers find roaming eSIMs behave differently, but never promise a client call from Dubai on WhatsApp.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.
Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

What to look for in a United Arab Emirates plan
- Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
- Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
- Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
- A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
- Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.
Good to know in United Arab Emirates
- Careem (the local Uber) and the metro's nol app want data; taxis are card-friendly but hailing by app beats hailing by hand in the heat.
- Coverage is so good that a small-data plan often suffices — malls and hotels shower you with fast WiFi.
- If a working phone number matters for your trip, this is one country where a local physical SIM (sold at the airport with your passport) still has an edge — data-only eSIMs can't receive the SMS codes some UAE services send.
