Mobile networks in France

France has four national networks — Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile — and travel eSIMs ride one of them. Because France is in the EU roaming zone, many eSIMs sold for France actually cover all of Europe, which changes how you should shop.
Paris and every major city are solidly covered, including most of the Paris métro. Coverage stays good along the TGV lines and in towns; it thins in deep countryside — wine-country back roads, Alpine valleys and some village interiors with thick stone walls where indoor signal drops.

Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.
Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

What to look for in a France plan
- Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
- Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
- Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
- A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
- Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.
Good to know in France
- Train travel runs on the SNCF Connect app — tickets, platforms and strike updates all want data at exactly the moment station WiFi is weakest.
- Download offline maps for villages and wine regions; the prettiest detours are the least covered.
- Café WiFi exists but is nobody's plan A in France — mobile data is the reliable path, and city coverage makes it painless.

Yes. Keep your home SIM installed and WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number while data flows through the travel eSIM.
Can I share the data with my laptop?
Usually yes, via your phone's hotspot — but some plans block tethering, so check the plan details before buying.
When should I buy and install it?
A few days before departure, on home WiFi. Enable it when you land — unless the plan starts at install, which is why you check the activation rule first.
My phone doesn't support eSIM — now what?
A physical tourist SIM on arrival or a pocket WiFi rental still works fine — the comparison above applies the same way.
