Mobile networks in Mongolia

MobicomUnitelSkytelG-Mobile

Mongolia has four mobile networks: Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel and G-Mobile. Mobicom and Unitel both sell tourist data packages as an eSIM straight from their own websites (Mobicom calls it Tourist, Unitel calls it Tour SIM), so you can be connected before you land. A travel eSIM from an international seller rides on these same networks; check which one it names before you buy.

Signal is strongest in Ulaanbaatar and the towns. Mobicom states that its 4G reaches all 21 provinces and all 330 soum (district) centres; away from those settlements coverage is thinner and depends on the network, so plan for stretches without signal on long drives across the steppe or the Gobi.

Know this first in Mongolia

Mobicom's Tourist number is data only: it cannot make or receive calls apart from Mobicom's own help line, 2222, which has English support. If you need a phone number for drivers or guesthouses, choose a plan that includes calls.

30-second check

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.

Fastest way*#06#Dial it in your phone app — if an EID appears in the list, the phone supports eSIM.
Settings → Mobile data (Cellular) → if “Add eSIM” is there, it is supported

Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.

Does *#06# show an EID?
Is the phone carrier-unlocked?

Answer the two questionsAn EID plus an unlocked phone means a travel eSIM will work.

What to look for in a Mongolia plan

  1. Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
  2. Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
  3. Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
  4. A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
  5. Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.

Good to know in Mongolia

  • Download offline maps and save your camp and driver contacts before leaving Ulaanbaatar for the Gobi, Kharkhorin or Lake Khuvsgul, in case part of the drive has no signal.
  • Olgii and Khovd in the far west run one hour behind Ulaanbaatar, so check the local time on flights and tour pick-ups when you travel between the two.

Frequently asked questions

Will WhatsApp and my phone number still work?

Yes. Keep your home SIM installed and WhatsApp stays tied to your usual number while data flows through the travel eSIM.

Can I share the data with my laptop?

Usually yes, via your phone's hotspot — but some plans block tethering, so check the plan details before buying.

When should I buy and install it?

A few days before departure, on home WiFi. Enable it when you land — unless the plan starts at install, which is why you check the activation rule first.

My phone doesn't support eSIM — now what?

A physical tourist SIM on arrival or a pocket WiFi rental still works fine — the comparison above applies the same way.

Why are there no prices on this page?

Because they change weekly. A price table would mislead you within a month, so we link to live pricing instead.
