Spain's main networks — Movistar, Vodafone and Orange — cover the mainland and both archipelagos well, and Spain is in the EU roaming zone, so Europe-wide eSIMs work here including the Balearics and Canaries.
Madrid, Barcelona and the coastal cities have dense, fast coverage; the islands are well served in populated areas. Signal thins in the emptier interior — rural Extremadura, mountain stretches of Andalucía and the Pyrenees — and, as in Italy, thick old-town walls can weaken indoor reception.
Know this first in Spain
Multi-country Iberia trips (Portugal, Morocco day-trips aside) fit a Europe-wide plan better than a Spain-only one — note Morocco is NOT in the EU zone.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Two things must both be true: the phone supports eSIM, and it is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone can install an eSIM and still never connect.
Most iPhones from the XS and XR on support eSIM; of those sold in mainland China, only a few recent models do, and inside mainland China an eSIM from abroad cannot be installed. Lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions”.
Menu names differ by maker, and the same model can lack eSIM depending on the country it was sold in. No menu? Use the EID check above.

What to look for in a Spain plan
- Days first, data second — a plan that expires mid-trip is worse than one that runs a little low.
- Hotspot/tethering allowed, if you travel with a laptop or share with a partner.
- Which local network it uses — see above; coverage beats a small price difference.
- A top-up option, so you can extend without installing a new eSIM.
- Data-only is normal: most travel eSIMs come without a phone number, and calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime anyway.
